Ford Focus, Fiesta EcoNetic Diesels belong in the US
What’s the best small car deal?
September 8, 2011
OK. European fuel economy numbers don’t translate well to the US. Still, the fact that the Ford Focus EcoNetic achieves at least 65 mpg on the European cycle means at least 40-something in the US, possibly even combined, which would a pretty interesting accomplishment for a non-hybrid.
Regardless, why don’t US consumers have more choices? Why won’t automakers bring more fuel efficient, Euro-derived offerings to the US?
Anyway, the Focus EcoNetic is a specially-tuned 1.6-liter Duratorq turbodiesel engine that only offers 105 hp according to MotorTrend. Or, just 95 hp in the case of the Fiesta EcoNetic. So, these aren’t small speed racers, but not everyone buying a compact or subcompact is interested in the best 0 – 60 times possible. Instead, they are usually seeking value.
To achieve these fuel economy numbers, the Focus and Fiesta EcoNetics utilize 6 and 5 speed transmissions, respectively, as well as active grille shutters, and a smart alternator that captures kinetic energy during braking to optimize electric power usage.
Don’t like diesel?
Well, Ford is also bringing a 1.0-liter three-cylinder EcoBoost engine to Frankfurt, in addition to a 1.6-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder.
That’s called choices. Isn’t it time to bring these choices to the US?
