Compacts versus subcompacts in fuel economy and ride quality
What’s the best small car deal?
September 13, 2011
One good way to save money both at the dealership and at the pump is too think small cars. But how small should you go? Compact or subcompact? Is there really a big difference in fuel economy? Ride quality?
Are you giving up too much by going subcompact, or are the savings too good to pass up?
That’s what a few reporters and editors over at Cars.com tried to find out recently. Unfortunately, the results weren’t as clear as buyers might hope.
Anyway, the test pitted the Hyundai Accent against the Elantra, and the Ford Fiesta against the Focus, as well as each against every other. So, which car should you most consider?
Well, there was one clear winner when it comes to fuel economy, despite similar EPA ratings, the Ford Fiesta, which offered a few miles more per gallon versus the Focus and both Hyundai’s. In fact, the Accent only provided a small advantage over the Elantra.
In terms of ride quality, however, the results were very different. Most thought the Fiesta was too small and the transmission too choppy. However, the frugal-minded one of the bunch did pick the Fiesta. In fact, there wasn’t one clear winner.
What’s the take away?
Real world fuel economy is different than EPA fuel economy, but subcompacts like the Ford Fiesta are hard to beat without battery technology. Typically, however, you do get what you pay for in small cars. The compact cars typically cost more because they offer more — more that many are willing to pay.
Thus, you have to get out there and test drive several different vehicles when you’re in the market for a new compact or subcompact.
