Many believe the Prius is so successful because it allows consumers to gloat to the rest of the world about what great people they are. Not me. I believe many Prius drivers do want to gloat, but I believe just as many Prius drivers are simply following their beliefs - trying to do as much to fight foreign oil dependency and/or global warming as possible.
Ultimately, when the Camry hybrid is priced almost the same as the conventional Camry, then the Camry might still be the best selling car in America, but that status will be driven by the hybrid version, not the conventional version. Hybrid technology, not just unique hybrids, are the future. Just ask Toyota.
"Eventually, everything will be a hybrid," said Jim Press, president of Toyota Motor North America, in an interview Tuesday in New York according to the DetroitNews.

Hybrids are heavy, aren’t getting advertised MPG, and have batteries that eventually must be disposed of somehow. Diesels have proven that they can get significantly better mileage than gasoline engines, have torque to make up for the horsepower deficit, and weigh less.
You could get better mileage with a IC engine just by using a combination of different forced induction methods. Look at the Volkswagen catalytic converter and TSI engine, the prime example, with 170hp from only 1.4 liters. That’s over 100 hp/liter!
According to Consumer Reports, and many other independent testers, there isn't one single diesel vehicle achieving the fuel efficiency of the Prius or Civic hybrid.
Sure most hybrids aren't achieving their advertised MPGs - almost every single vehicle sold today isn't achieving their advertised MPG.
Diesel, as an alternative to hybrid vehicles, is complete nonsense. Hybrid technology is not fuel dependent. A hybrid could just as easily, ultimately, work with diesel, gasoline or hydrogen for that matter.
Thus a diesel hybrid is far better than just diesel, as well as better than a gasoline hybrid.
