A-BAT Hybrid Truck Concept

Another
unique hybrid from Toyota
According to MSNBC
Toyota will introduce a hybrid truck concept at the 2008
North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Like
the Prius,
the A-BAT hybrid truck concept will utilize a very unusual
body style, however, also like the Prius, Toyota's newest
hybrid concept still oozes functionality.
"The four-passenger pickup features a 4-foot bed,
while a translucent roof panel slides open to allow for
tall cargo inside the cab. The bed can be extended by 2
feet by folding down the passthrough midgate into the cab
and by another 2 feet by opening the tailgate."
Thus, if you need to pick
up a couple dozen sheets of 4X8 plywood - no problem.
Additionally, the hybrid truck also includes a
solar-powered, portable 7-inch navigation screen that
offers WIFI Internet. Moreover, the A-Bat hybrid provides
both AC and DC so that A-Bat drivers can power tools,
computers, or small appliances, in addition to jump-start
capabilities.
"Driving from beyond the suburbs to the city is a way
of life for many people," said
Kevin Hunter, president of Calty Design Research, Inc.
"We've taken Toyota's truck heritage to a different
level by envisioning a vehicle capable of maneuvering the
suburbs as well as dirt roads. This compact truck is as
comfortable for long commutes as it is for road trips. It
can accommodate outdoor toys and home improvement
supplies. Plus, customers benefit from the hybrid
powertrain's low emissions and fuel economy."
Built on a unibody
platform, the A Bat hybrid offers car-like handling
according to Toyota, yet provides truck functionality.
According to Toyota,
"The concept's unique look is a combination of the
large body surfaces, intersecting tight surface planes,
crisp lines and the trapezoidal profile. The A-BAT's
19-inch wheels sit at the vehicle's corners creating a
tough and ready stance."
I ripped Toyota for their disappointing show at the LA
Auto Show, but Toyota has restored my hybrid faith with
this hybrid truck.
Maybe selling a million hybrid
vehicles per year within the next few years isn't so
unrealistic.
