A recent article by Money
magazine continues the bias, by mainstream auto
media, against hybrids such as the Toyota Prius.
Compiling a list of performance-based, gas efficient autos,
Money stated, "That the hybrid king, the
gas-electric Toyota Prius, didn't have what it takes to
earn a nod. By our reckoning, it makes too many
compromises in the name of economy. "
|
|
Further
adding that, "its overall 39 miles per gallon fell
short of expectations, and wasn't much better than cars
-- including Toyota's own Corolla -- that beat the Prius
in other critical categories."

Of course this 39 mpg average is based on highway
miles. In urban areas - the high traffic areas that a
significant amount of Americans drive - the Prius gets significantly
better gas mileage, while producing significantly
less pollution. Ignoring this difference seems to imply
that mainstream media, much like the Big 3 automakers,
just don't get it.
If places like China and India act like the US in terms
of automobiles and gas consumption, $2 per gallon
gas will seem like a fairy tale. These auto writers and
auto makers are raping the earth and
suffocating it's consumers.
Where is the vision? The Big Three keep polluting
the environment because it's extremely profitable,
and the health and welfare of their consumers obviously
means little. Money should be ashamed, but I guess to
them, money means everything.
