The Union of Concerned
Scientists hammered automakers, especially those in the
U.S., for almost completely failing to do anything about
global warming (See
AP Story).
In terms of heat-trapping gas emissions, automakers have
been running in place for almost the last 20
years," David Friedman said. "The industry is
more or less ignoring global warming when you look at
the products they're putting on the road."
|
Apparently, automakers
feel that ignoring global warming allows them to deny
any responsibility for global warming.
It's ironic that the Pentagon finds global warming to be
one of the largest threats to national security, yet
automakers continue to make the problem worse, even as
the evidence proving their culpability continues to
grow.
When is their denial
malicious? When will their internal studies come to
light proving their responsibility?

It is sad that many
Americans support automakers like GM and Ford because
they are built in America, yet these companies push
Americans into greater and greater danger because of
their inability to profitably create efficient vehicles.
911, the Wars in Iraq, Israel and Palestine, these
issues are all extremely driven by America's need for
cheap oil. Hybrid
car efficiency a decade ago could have helped
prevent these calamities.
The truth is, American automakers have disgraced America
and endangered its citizens, and the whole thing was
driven by profit. To much of corporate America, the
average American is expendable.
American, multi-national auto corporations are driven
purely by profit, never patriotism. In fact, considering
the state of world affairs, buying a Japanese hybrid car
is far more American than buying some gas-guzzling,
world-destroying, SUV.
Buying a Toyota
Prius, or Accord
hybrid, is one of the most significant purchases any
American can make. The Ford
Escape hybrid is a good choice as well, but how
American is it when the most important aspect of it, the
hybrid powertrain, is leased from Japan?
Accept nothing less than hybrid car efficiency.
