Now
is the best time to buy a hybrid vehicle?
Monday,
March 19, 2007
That
is the word from Edmunds.com.
The fact that automakers are offering great incentives on hybrid
cars, coupled with the fact that tax
credits on Toyota hybrids are about to again be
reduced is a good reason to buy a hybrid in the next few
weeks if you are in the market.
Still, is it really the best time to buy a hybrid car? Are
the deals going to decrease in the future?
Sure it's possible that the summer driving season might
raise gas prices and the demand for hybrid vehicles -
forcing less incentives. However, without a
refinery-killing hurricane or a political crisis with one
of the major oil importers, gas prices and demand for
hybrids will idle after the summer.
Besides, aren't hybrid vehicle prices going down? That's
at least what Toyota claims.
Ultimately, the future of hybrids will be driven by
economies of scale, which requires the sale of many more
hybrids per year. That means deals and a buyer's market.
In the short term, Toyota's tax credit is a good reason to
consider a Toyota hybrid before April, but that is only a
maximum of a $700 difference. So, don't sweat it too much
if you can't buy a hybrid in the next few weeks. You might
have to wait until after the summer to buy a hybrid for
the best deals, but good deals on hybrids almost certainly
aren't going to disappear.
