The life expectancy of hybrid batteries is not an issue
Update: March 30, 2012
How long do hybrid car batteries last? Are they expensive to replace?
Hybrid cars like the Toyota Prius have now been on the road over a decade, and some of these hybrids have logged 100,000, 150,000, even 200,000 miles -- on the same battery pack. The batteries are tried and tested.
Overall, most hybrid batteries are expected to last the average life of the hybrid vehicle, or around 100,000 miles. For most of this life, batteries are covered under warranty, and some hybrid batteries, such as the one in the Hyundai Sonata hybrid, are under warranty for life.
Of course, there have been some hybrid battery problems, particularly regarding the Honda Civic hybrid. Fortunately, most Civic hybrid batteries didn't fail. Instead, cell quality degraded causing a decrease in fuel economy. Overall, however, this issue appears to have been resolved, although it is still a concern for those buying used Civic hybrid cars.
Additionally, as hybrid cars approach 100,000 - 150,000 miles, some degradation can be experienced, resulting in decreased fuel economy, and eventual battery failure is possible and has occurred. But, relax before you freak out about the cost of a new battery pack.
Certainly, you could buy a new battery pack if you think you're going to drive a hybrid with 150,000 miles already on it, another 150,000 miles. However, if you're only trying to squeeze out another 50,000 or so, why buy a new battery pack?
According to Consumer Reports, even 10 year old Prius hybrid cars are one of the best used car buys, despite the mileage on the battery. Why? Because Consumer Reports found a very healthy supply of used battery packs that offered low mileage and were still in great condition. Costs? Around $500.
Even better, Consumer Reports found other critical components of old Prius hybrids were in exceptional shape. Because of the power split between electricity and gasoline power, hybrid cars are able to significantly minimize normal wear and tear. Thus, even if you have to fork at $500 for a battery pack replacement after a 120,000 miles, you've spent less on other forms of maintenance.
Ultimately, hybrid car battery life is reliable. The life expectancy of hybrid batteries is not an issue. You don't have to believe me, but I think it's worth believing Consumer Reports.
