Advances in building material combined with economically viable solar power and hydrogen fuel cells could catalyze a new energy infra-structure in the United States.

Granted, this might not create "energy independence", but it could be the impetus to faster technological breakthroughs. While some of this technology is still being developed, this vision must be pursued, in whatever way possible and it must be done now.

Info.

While hybrids are not yet fuel celled cars, they represent an ideal transition point, a cataclysm of positive force empowered by individuals and corporations to spend money on technologies that advance the quality of life for everyone, rather than just shareholders.

Additionally, since automotive transportation is one of the largest industries in the world, the impact holds that much more potential. Because the price of this technology is very affordable for the average consumer, especially after tax breaks and fuel-economy savings, the impact can be immediately industry-changing.

While the automobile has changed the world, it has been very costly:
  • Killing more Americans than all wars combined.
  • Making the US dependent on foreign oil resulting in costs upwards of $200 billion per year.
  • Killing millions of wild animals per week, while emitting about ¼ of US greenhouse gases, possibly significantly contribution to global warming.
  • Contributing spectacular increases in asthma, heart disease and bronchial infections.

Hybrid technologies move towards a hydrogen-based economy by integrating the first phases of new technology this into the engineering process. More important, in the short term, hybrid technologies can immediately and significantly reduce fuel consumption and pollution.

Many argue that cheap hydrogen could make the 21st Century more democratic and decentralized, similar to the way oil transformed the 19th and 20th century by empowering corporations, causing a redistribution of wealth, new competition, and an increased living standard for most created by entirely new sources of energy and materials.

Now new technology can empower every individual, help clean the environment, and create opportunities for everyone to prosper. The current world order will not survive. Either the people will move forward, or we will all move backward. Humanistic technology - creating cheap and clean energy - is a peaceful revolution that can conquer the will of the people better than any war.
