When it comes to new CAFE regulations, Honda isn't worried. Yet, Honda isn't very bullish on plug-in vehicles, which offer automakers a lot of potential in regards to balancing CAFE and fleet fuel economy. Yet, automakers like GM and Toiyota, which are advocates of plug-in hybrid vehicles and electric vehicles are afraid of new CAFE regulations. How does that make sense? Honda: Proof that plug-in vehicles are a gimmick?

Honda isn't a bull on plug-in vehicles, choosing to instead focus on cheap hybrids. Honda also isn't afraid of new CAFE regulations. So, why are automakers that are bullish on plug-in vehicles so afraid of CAFE?

GM's plug-in revolution won't happen fast

GM will only make a few thousand Chevy Volts in 2010, followed by 10,000 in 2011, followed by 60,000 in 2012. The plug-in revolution isn't going to happen fast.

Purchasing a Toyota Prius just isn't worth the money? My local dealer told me that  the only Prius available on the lot included a $5,000 markup and $5,000 worth of dealer add-ons, which are very profitable to dealerships? Has buying a Toyota Prius hybrid car become a stupid consumer decision? $10,000 Extra for a Toyota Prius?

The only Prius available at my local dealership included a $5,000 dealer markup and $5,000 worth of dealer add-ons. Ridiculous?

I'm not against diesel vehicles, but how can you compare diesels to hybrids when hybrid vehicles can be diesel hybrid vehicles, for instance?

Toyota will start producing lithium battery packs for hybrids in 2009, achieving full scale production in 2010. Still, Toyota will use both lithium and NiMH batteries for its hybrids for some time.

Not long ago, Honda promised a Prius fighting hybrid vehicle that would be more efficient than the Prius and cheaper than the Prius. In fact this new Honda hybrid vehicle was promised to cost less than $20,000. Have material costs made a hybrid vehicle with a cost less than $20,000 impossible? A hybrid vehicle below $20,000? Keep dreaming?
Material costs on all vehicles are increasing, and that might mean a hybrid vehicle for less than $20,000 might never happen.
