Chrysler took a page out of GM's playbook this year at at NAIAS with a bunch of new hybrid electric vehicles, or as GM calls them, range-extended vehicles.
The Jeep Renegade, like the Chevy Volt, is a range extended electric vehicle - yes you can call it a plug-in hybrid vehicle, but range extended electric vehicle is a much more apt description.
The Renegade is designed to achieve 40 miles of electric range using a lithium battery-powered electric motor that can be extended with a 1.5-liter, 3-cylinder Bluetec diesel engine for about 400 miles or range. Combined, the Renegade is capable of achieving 110 miles per gallon.
According to Chrysler, "The all-new Jeep Renegades concept's lightweight aluminum architecture and regen-breaking system help to improve overall efficiency, while dual electric 200 kw motors propel a very capable 4x4 system - complete with low range and locking differentials - worthy of carrying the Jeep name.
