Purchased a 2010 Prius in Novmeber and currwently have 7200mi on it. We have averaged 53.6 mpg and the car is fantastic. I wasn't sure when we were shopping for it, but the wife convinced me. Sure glad she did! -- Anonymous
I love my Prius 2010 and I would buy it again. This is a great car, the best MPG in the country and it has a sporty look. I bough my prius 3rd generation in late September 2009, I love everything about it. Just wished the prices would be lower. -- Anonymous
Bought this Gen III after looking at the Ford Escape - fairly noisy, kinda cramped for a big guy & only 40" between the wheel wells (we'll get to this in a moment). Looked at the RAV4 but that's tiny, underpowered & noisy at freeway speeds - at the daughter's insistence, got in a Prius - man, what a little spaceship! Truly 'fly by wire' and nearly everything to keep track of is in the upper dash display or the nav center. And even though I don't drive for milage, it's in the upper 40's / low 50's - now I really don't care much whether the price of gas is 2.75 or 2.99 or 3.12 - I just fill it up with a smile! The interior room is pretty amazing - it doesn't look like there's that much but there is & more! And the back seats are just downright comfy - amazing! Oh, and about the wheel well width - we can cart around two Puli's (actually Pulick) in crates - I can do it in the Prius's 48" but not in the Ford's 40" - like I said - amazing! Never thought I'd be a stinkin' Prius owner… gotta love it!! Dave in Gilroy, CA
rs said... I bought my 2010 Prius just 2 weeks ago. I absolutely love this car!! Besides the obvious hybrid gas consumption/green advantage (close to 60 mpg highway driving), it's features are luxurious - something I was not expecting before I test drove it. I chose black and it's sleekness is definitely a head-turner, and the interior design is both cozy and spacious and makes for an extremely quiet ride.
Purchased a 2010 Prius in June .... approximately 2500 miles of enjoyment so far. Love the vehicle ... averaging 53mpg with the lasted tankful averaging 55.2mpg. If you are into saving the planet, saving fuel cost or simply want to stop funding the oil cartel this is the vehicle for you. Performance - gas mileage and being part of the energy saving club are all reasons enought - add Toyota's quality and technology I am sure you will be like me and be sold on the vehicle. I truly beleive 60mpg is reachable given the dynamic breaking and electric only mode (up to 25 m/h). Yes I love this car .... as this is coming from a guy who for the past 10 years has driven a Lexus GS300. Mr.Bill
We purchased a 2010 Prius in late June and have almost 9,000 miles on it as of August 11, 2009. On our first trip, we drove to the west coast with stops in Salt Lake City, Portland OR, Olympic Peninsula near Tacoma WA and Spokane WA and back to PA on July 31. MPG was 53 on trip to left coast. MPG around town, is higher We have package #4 with GPS, satellite radio, four CD changer, great speakers, moon roof and a dashboard panel that has beaucoup info. Also heated front seats, bluetooth, and solar panels which drives the "degree reduction" device that can lower temp inside for max of 15 minutes so that interior is essentially equal to outside temp. MPG is sure to increase as driving techniques improve and we master downhill shift knob labeled "B". Downsides? None detected, so far, knock wood. This truly is the third generation Prius. We were the first to take possession of a 2010 from Freedom Toyota in Harrisburg PA. They were excellent in almost daily updates on the whereabouts of the vehicle from Japan to USA. When we took possession the staff at Freedom Toyota were extremely patient and knowledgeable. We recieved at least three hours of tutoring and went back or called for more instruction. Our 5,000 mile oil change occured out west at Coeur d"Alene, Idaho at Parker Toyota. Once again we recieved excellent service. Eileen and Don Slowski Aug 11, 2009
Jason said... We bought a 2009 Prius at the end of July 09. We have averaged about 26000 miles year on our cars for about the last 8 years. We just turned 25000 miles this September and have averaged 51 mpg. I figure we have saved $1200 in gas already.

one word AMAZING!!! so we bought an 07 prius, the middle package, one trip says it all... from our hometown in california( santa barabara county) to my moms we drove 500 miles(az) from there we traveled to san francisco another 500 miles, to salinas, back to san francisco, and then back to santa barabara county, a total of 1500 miles on our mile thingy, we checked our bank statements, nananaaahhhh...98.56 cents, believe it or not!!! i drove and ive mastered that gas pedal, i averaged 48mpg freeway doing 99.9 down hill all the way baby. after that trip we traded our 06 chevy equinox for the top of the line 09 camry navi bluetooth etc once you go toyota hybrid theres no going back, we used to be the people always driving by car lots to look at the new cars, now we just look at ours and smile so satisfactorily.. specialy when were only spending about 75 dollars a month on gas 50 for the camry and 25 for the prius, roughly

Excellent car! We've averaged over 50mpg with a family of five. Longer trips have averaged 56.4 and 60.1.

We are looking at trading in our low yeilding 22mpg Honda in for a second Prius.

We drive Toyota Prius's. Mine is a 2001, hers is 2003. During the summer and winter when the AC or Heat is running I average 40mpg, she does a little better, 43mpg. In the spring and fall when we don't use AC or heat much our averages are better 45-50mpg. We work 2 jobs each. One job for both of us is 25 miles away, the other is 75 miles away. The closer jobs are about 45 mph range. The further jobs are 65 mph range, with which we get lower mpgs.

Happy Holidays,

B. B. & J. J.

I have a 2004 (Jan) Prius 30,000mi. I admit I am a little lead footed. My worst mileage for a tank was last winter 38MPG. The best was last spring 54MPG. Mostly though its 40 to 45 in winter, 48 to 52 in spring, summer & fall.

Hello,

The gas mileage for our 2004 TOYOTA full loaded prius from the display screen is about 44 miles/gal city
mileage. This is an interesting question for us because I used to calculate gas mileage when I am at
the pump. With the display of TOYOTA, I simply take
down the number it gives us.
Regards,

I have a 2004 Prius, which was bought in November of 2003.  I believe it to have been the first Prius on the road in our county.  It has made mostly area trips, but did take us to the Outer Banks of NC during the summer of 2004, and to Iowa in the spring of 2005.  During the trip home from NC we did reach 60mph for a short time.  Otherwise,  we average about 46-48 mph in the colder weather and when using AC.  During the rest of the year - spring and fall-  we average about 49-50 mph.  I absolutely love this car.  It is fun to drive, has plenty of pep, and is very comfortable.  We have had no problems with it, except for the original tires, which were probably cheap. I replaced them after about 25,000 miles.  We have had folks follow us home to ask about the car!  Now, however, there are several others in our area.  We live in NE

P.A.

My wife and I live in the Dallas/Fort Worth TX area, and took delivery on a new Prius just after Thanksgiving. We were fortunate that our dealer, Freeman Toyota of Hurst does not charge an extra "Delivery Fee." This is the finest automobile that we have ever driven. Our trade in, a Mercury Grand Marquis was giving us 15 mpg over all, and had a fatal flaw called a compositie (plastic)intake manifold that cracked, causing coolant to leak, and the engine to run hot--while we scurried to add coolant. The current class action lawsuit against this problem does not cover our 1997 model. For this reason, we chose not to consider this manufacturer's version of a hybrid.

The Prius is awesome. The quality that Toyota puts into the car would compare most favorably with the Lexus. We joke that it's more Lexus than Toyota. Our miles per gallon is an obvious benefit, and this fuel efficient vehicle is our personal statement against foreign oil dependency. We support the technology that Toyota has made available in the Prius, and look forward to more consumers considering both the ecological and financial benefits. Yesterday, a big butt SUV cut me off, and all but took our front end off as he powered by us. I laughed. We had just filled our gas tank, and took a whopping 8 gallons of fuel in the 11.9 galloon gas tank--that was for two weeks driving. The macho SUV probably spends $40 twice each week. Hmmm. Maybe he owns a lot of Exon-Mobil stock--how about those billion dollar quarterly profits. Thanks Toyota, and come on Ethanol!

I drive locally, 4-6 50 mile roundtrips a week and 3-5 times a year longer
trips, putting on about 18,000 miles a year.  My 2004 Prius averages 44 to
47 mpg.

My 2004 Prius gets 44 mpg fairly consistently, figured by calculator and
actual gas consumed not display mileage.  It will vary 2 - 3 mpg if the
accelerator is used aggressively.

R.R.

My husband and I bought a Prius in June, 2005.  Most of the driving has been in the city.  The car is averaging 45 mpg.  I just bought a 2005 Accord Hybrid.  I have only driven in the city so far and am averaging 24 mpg.

I drive a 2004 Prius in the snowy state of Maine. The past two winters my tires were in pretty good shape, and the Prius handled fine in snow. It handles the snow a lot like any other front wheel drive sedan would. However, I have only 27000 miles on the car, and the tires are already getting pretty bald.

This is my only complaint about the car so far. It gets about 50 mpg in the winter and 60mpg in the summer on my commute (which is mostly moderate speed, but long enough for the car to really warm up).

J.H.

We were averaging 52 mpg over the summer and through the fall in our 2005 Prius. When colder weather arrived, we fell into the high 40's. I have experienced that the display overestimates mileage by about 3-5%. I calculate every tankful, and this is pretty consistent. Also, I encourage all owners to learn about pulse and glide driving. You can't do it all the time as in this experiment: http://origin.www.toyota.com/
html/hybridsynergyview/2005
/fall/marathon.html
but the concepts can help your mileage. I've done a couple of 60+mpg legs in the last couple of weeks, and look forward to becoming more practiced at it, esp. as warmer weather returns!

C.M.

We own a 2005 Toyota Prius purchased March 2005.  The mileage now is 13,300
miles we average 50 miles per gal both on the hwy and town driving.  We live
in the mountains of Colorado, so most of our driving is mountain highway
driving.

A.W.

I get around 50 mpg on the road traveling 60 to 66 mph, and average around 42 mpg in the city. I'm pleased with the results.

I would like some information about the tires on the 2002 Toyota Prius. I bought the car for my mom a few months ago and she replaced the original tires (17,000miles)as she was told they were won and incorrect. Now, her mechanic is saying that there are only a few tires built for the Prius and they wear out very quickly. Any help on the tires being used on your Prius and experience with wear would be appreciated.

My wife drives our 2005 package 5 Prius 35-40 miles each day in city/rural traffic. The computer shows an average of 47-53 mpg, while fill-ups compute at 43-51 mpg (some differences may be accoutable to tempereature and atmospheric pressure at the time of fill). Considering my wife's LEAD FOOT, I believe the car is performing amazingly well. Driving it in town, I have achieved computer readings of 57 mpg, and I believe it could easily exceed 60 mpg in heavy stop-and-go conditions.

Are you kiddin' me? I have never had a car -- I have been driving since 1960 -- that came anywhere as close to its EPA ratings as the Prius!

If you are getting 43 mpg at 70 and are unhappy, trade the Prius and see if 30 mpg feels better in a conventional car!

mac_guy

After 22,000 miles and two and a half years on my 2004 Prius I've been averaging 48 MPG.

About 50% of my mileage is trips of 5 miles or less and the rest are trips of 25 miles or more. I do great on the longer trips, obviously, usually about 55 MPG and the shorter ones are about 45 MPG.

Keeping the tires fully inflated makes a huge difference, as does making sure the oil isn't overfilled. Sometimes I get a "bad" tank of gas a notice that with identical driving conditions the mileage is suddenly off by about 5%.

Cybele

I am very happy with my 2006 Prius!

I.W.

After 2 years and 18,000 event free miles, we're getting an honest 45-51 mpg and love the car. It's got plenty of pickup, is great for short and medium trips, and has been a totally delightful auto to own.

i have a prius in london especially useful in c-charge zone! i average 35mpg with me at the wheel in the city and my lead-footed wife averages 28mpg!

love that car!

We have an '05 Prius which we truly love. I especially enjoy passing all those obscene hummers at the gas stations! I average 47-50 mpg in town, 52-55 on the highway with the AC on and averaging about 60 mph. My wife only gets 38-42 in town. I keep telling her to get her foot out of the firewall, but to no avail!

I have a 2007 Prius that I drove from Denver to Salt Lake City and back, brand new. Coming back, we got 54 mpg, and then the first "commute only" tank I got around 48 mpg. Since then, the weather has gotten a little warmer and I've discovered the "pulse and glide" technique (using cruise control very carefully even in city traffic).
My last tank was about 5o% highway and the gauge showed 52.4 mpg at fillup time. I was only able to squeeze about 9 gallons in after 490 + miles, and that computed to around 54.7 mpg, so unlike most accounts, my actual mileage appears to be higher than the gauge shows.
This is the most incredible vehicle I've ever owned and now I'm sorry I didn't get it sooner. I should get $4500 back in tax credits next year, so it is an amazing deal. I haven't even really thought about the money savings on gas, but it is certainly a nice side effect.
I live in the suburbs and when I drive into Denver or Boulder my mileage is almost always higher when I leave the city, than it was when I entered. The car has exceeded all expectations and I couldn't be happier.

We have a 2007 Prius Barcelona Red Metalic ( Great Color) have bought new March 5th 2007 already have 2400 miles on it. Very fun to drive back up camera is great feature, also the airbag system and smart key, I love the smart key feature just keep the fob in pocket never touch the key to unlock the door again. mpg is averaging 53.4 mixed city /highway
Traded a Gas Guzzling Jeep 4x4 cherokee which was getting 13 mpg.
The prius extra cost made up for it in MPG in our case and will be worth more to us when gas goes back up.
Well gotta go take a drive in the prius I just talked myself into a drive..
have a fun day

We are in the market to purchase a new vehicle which would be easy on the environment and on the pocketbook. We are now considering the Toyota Highlander and Prius. The Prius certainly gets better reviews on this blog and elsewhere. But we have two sons, ages 9 and 13. Most positive testimonials about the Prius seem to be written by singles or couples with no kids. Is there anyone out there who uses a Prius as a family car, and if so, how is it working out?

Ah, Dear lead footers

The prius is not only a vehicle but a way living and driving.

When I bought my 2003 Prius, my toyota rep said that you have to adjust your driving habits. Which is true, I get an amazing 45 mpg.
The 2008 Prius should blow the other auto makers out of the water, if Toyota achieves the 100+ mpg spec.

I plan on trading in my 2003 Prius for a 2008.

Well, the more I drive the Prius the higher the gas mileage I get. It is due to learning how to drive for high mileage. I have the screen on the Bar Graphs and I am less hurried. I do use the Pulse and Glide approach (I kind of self discovered it but see it in these blogs now) which uses the gas engine far less time. I can stay over 60 MPG if I do not want to rush anywhere. Between Golden & Boulder, Colorado on very hilly Rt 93 I get 63 MPG for the round trip if I am happy with 50 MPH speeds (the limit is 45 and 55 for various parts so I am not really holding folks up even though they like to go 65-70 MPH). The other technique which helps is to anticipate stops and definately glide WITH THE "ENGINE BRAKE" feature activated to get more regenerative breaking than otherwise on a glide. I believe that if I really wanted, I could get 65-70 MPG on casual trips. My old car was a 1993 Geo Metro XFI from which I did get 55 MPG. At first I get 48 on the Prius and was disappointed that ti did not beat the Geo XFI. However, now I am really happy with the fantastic Prius results and I love the luxury (compared to the GEO XFI ).
My out of pocket price for the 2007 Prius after all tax credits and other incentives (and with some hard bargaining in March 2007) was 14,800 including taxes. You cannot beat that for a lovely comfortable fuel efficient car....with great audio... and room to carry a bicycle inside or to actually camp inside (put down the back seats and lean the fronts forward and 2 people can sleep in comfort). I bought the Prius over the Honda due to the Hatch Back and the amazing space. Not needing a bike rack saves wind resistance which saves gas.
