My Accord hybrid gets 17-18 mpg when my
driving consists only of inner city San
Francisco's stop and go traffic with lots of hills.
Local highway trips
yield 26-28mpg generally.
I usually get 37-39 mpg
on trips from San Francisco to Orange County (which is
past LA.) The drive is all highway, but often has some
mix of stop and go in the bay area and then the long
steep grade up and down the Grapevine.
Hope that helps.
I just bought a 2005 Accord Hybrid.
I have only driven in the city so far and am averaging
24 mpg.
After 16,000 miles, my
average mpg is 32 mpg city and highway. I have exceeded
40 mpg multiple times under ideal conditions on the
highway. I have achieved 38 mpg on local routes.
In order to achieve 40/38, an extremely light foot on
the accelerator is required. Allowing your speed to drop
as you go up hill and picking up speed as go down hill.
Also required is light traffic.
My wife says "you are driving like an old man"
when I am obtaining high mpg. On the downside, I have
experienced 25/32 mpg under normal conditions using a
heavy foot.
Conclusion, your driving habits and conditions will
dictate your miles per gallon.

MASSACHUSETTS, I AVERAGE 36.5 MPG DOING EXACTLY THE SPEED
LIMIT ON CRUISE CONTROL. BACK & FORTH TO WORK ON RURAL
ROADS, FAIRLY FLAT, I AVERAGE 31.5 MPG REGULARLY W/O
AUTOMATIC CLIMATE CONTROL TURNED ON.

I have a 2005 Accord hybrid and I average about 28.5 overall. I drop down to about 20 for short trips such as running errands. I am consistent at about 37 to 39 on the interstate with the cruise set at 70 -72. I drove from Portland to Sonoma and averaged 40.1 mpg at that speed and that included two stops.
I am overall happy. I wish it were better around town but it exceeds the highway estimates and I have cut my gas use by 1/3 with no loss of comfort and an increase in performance. My work sprung for the car lease so the extra money was a non issue for me.
You do learn how to drive to maximize mileage, I can beat my wifes mileage by 1 or 2mpg on similar trips.
