Still need for different strategies after a severe crash
The National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration has closed its case into Chevy Volt fire risk following a severe crash.
The Volt which ignited into a fire a few weeks after NHTSA testing has been under investigation for months. However, following some safety upgrades by GM, the Volt was deemed to be no more of a fire risk than conventional vehicles.
However, the NHTSA did note that the Volt and other plug-in vehicles do require different handling procedures following a severe crash, such as actions by first responders, fire fighters, tow truck drivers, paramedics, etc. Consequently, the NHTSA will continue to work on new prototocols for handling plug-in vehicles following crashes.
Nevertheless, despite the government's safety stamp approva,l Congress still intends to hold an investigation into the NHTSA's handling of the Volt.
Still, in terms of Chevy Volt fire risk, the Volt is not any more of a risk than a conventional vehicle. The Chevy Volt is safe.
Thus, if you're in the market for plug-in vehicle, such as the Volt, safety should not be a concern that dissuades consumers.
Stay tuned for more on Chevy Volt safety.
