While American automakers
have consistently lagged behind the Japanese-proven
hybrid model, they are at least starting to enter the
race.
Also, sold as the Sierra,
this mild hybrid will join the Ram mild hybrid, and
their cousin, the full
hybrid Ford escape.

Although mild hybrids, such as the Silverado
hybrid, don’t improve fuel efficiency as much as
full hybrids, it’s easier to integrate the mild hybrid
technology into existing models.

As cost concerns have
continued to be a huge stumbling block for American
automakers entering the hybrid market, mild hybrids at
least provide seem much-needed impetus.
While Ford is
offering the Ford
Escape Hybrid as a full hybrid, they had to license
the technology from Toyota’s popular hybrid, the Toyota
Prius.
Nonetheless, it’s about time the American Big 3
automakers do the patriotic thing and help provide some
options for reducing America’s dependency on foreign
oil.
