Buying a New Or Used Toyota
Prius hybrid
Updated November 2011
Today the Toyota Prius comes in 4 different packages starting at $23,520 up to $28,790. However, if you shop around, you can save as much as 8 percent of the price of the base Prius if you are willing to negotiate.
That would bring the base Prius price down to $22,295 according to TrueCar.
Now that price is for the 2011 model. Data for the 2012 model is not yet available, but it seems doubtful that there will be much negotiation room on the 2012 Toyota Prius.
Of course, negotiating the price of your new Prius is just one half the equation. And what may seem like a great price, could turn into a poor financial deal during the financing process.
Thus, try to finance before going to the dealership, such as with a credit union.
Nevertheless, sometimes dealerships offer better deals via corporate incentives, and as of November, 0 percent financing, for example, was available on the Prius for those with high credit scores.
In terms of used Prius hybrids, good resale value makes these cars relatively expensive compared to other cars. Nevertheless, Consumer Reports has found that even 10 year old Prius hybrids are good buys.
In terms of pricing, a 5 year old Prius with around 75,000 miles on it and in excellent condition would still fetch $14,637 if bought from a dealership, or $15,087 if certified.
If you're willing to take a bit of risk and buy such a vehicle from a private owner the price is around $12,637, which is obviously the better deal.

What about leasing?
In the past, leases were a poor way of financing option for the Prius. However, these days leasing is often the way to go. Ultimately, demand seems to be the key metric behind good and bad Prius leases.
During times of high demand, leases become less attractive.
