Ultrabattery: Lead acid + supercaps

A couple of weeks ago I wrote Hybrid Cars: Is plugging in always the best option. One angle I took with that article involved supercapacitors. Essentially, I wondered whether a combination of a supercapacitor and a battery could result in cheaper (compared to plug-ins), incredibly fuel efficient hybrid vehicles that don't need to be plugged in for power.

It's not that I'm against plug-in hybrid vehicles, I just don't see them as the solution for every consumer, especially for economy car shoppers in the short term when plug-in hybrids will demand a premium price.

However, unlike my lithium-cap, the CSIRO Ultrabattery uses lead acid batteries rather than lithium, which is interesting because lead acid batteries might offer a cost-competitive advantage.

"Previous tests show the UltraBattery has a life cycle that is at least four times longer and produces 50 per cent more power than conventional battery systems. It’s also about 70 per cent cheaper than the batteries currently used in HEVs," states David Lamb, Energy Transformed National Research Flagship.

I asked Micky Bly, GM Director of Global Hybrids, about supercapacitors recently. Micky told me that GM continues to work with supercaps in the lab, but there are no plans - at least not publicly - to use supercaps in any GM hybrids anytime soon because GM thinks the technology is too cost-prohibitive.

Could lead acid change that, or is lead acid just the wrong direction?
