Can the Big 3's new small cars sell in the US?
Small is the new cool?At the LA Auto Show this year, US automakers showcased a number of new small cars, trending away from their over-dependence upon large, gas-guzzling vehicles along the way to increased CAFE requirements.
But will they sell? Is this the kind of car the US auto consumer wants, especially from the Big 3, whom collectively have a pretty shoddy record of selling small cars?
“Our research shows that, despite what the U.S. government is telling us, few Americans want to downsize to smaller cars,” says George Peterson, president of the Los Angeles-based consulting firm AutoPacific, “Finding more buyers inclined to purchase smaller cars will not be easy.”

My problem with the Big Three and small cars is that they always stiff the American consumer. For example, the American versions of the Focus and Fiesta get half the fuel economy of their European counterparts.
That's supposed to be different this time around, and I think that will be true to some extent.
Pricing is also going to be a big thing, especially if Toyota and Honda are successful at bringing even cheaper hybrids to the compact segment, such as the Fit hybrid and the rumored Scion-like hybrid.

I'd be interested in a Scion hybrid to replace our aging 2001 Accord. Our newer car (2008 Scion xD) has proven to be a delightful vehicle to drive.
