Is Obama too corny to be green?
All cars must be flex fuel capable?Today, E85 ethanol pumps are only available at 2 percent of all gas stations. Thus, most flex fuel vehicles have never used E85. The biggest advantage of flex fuel vehicles is that they help US automakers sell more gas guzzlers because of the CAFE credits provided to flex fuel vehicles.
Even worse, today's corn-based ethanol is not good for the environment, and it probably takes as much energy - if not more - to produce ethanol as it provides. Moreover, it doesn't burn efficiently and it's very corrosive.
Yet, because the corn lobby is so powerful, ethanol still is an important part of American politics, and President Barack Obama has been a corn lobby patsy for years.
But, you ain't seen nothing yet.
The Obama administration is now considering a move that would require all vehicles to be flex fuel vehicles, at a cost of at least $1 billion per year.
Isn't it time to put corn in check?
Not long ago President Obama vowed to take the back door politics out of mainstream politics. Well, here's your chance Mr. President. Do the right thing, not the politically expedient thing. Corn simply is not green, regardless of how many greenbacks Illinois corn farmers might provide for your re-election bid.
