GM's XFE - Is it worthwhile?

How much Extra Fuel Economy?

According to a number of sources, "General Motors will produce for the 2009 model year special fuel economy models of four of its biggest, thirstiest trucks, the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups and the Chevy Tahoe and GMC Yukon SUVs." Ultimately, the new vehicles will improve city and highway fuel economy by 1 mpg. Obviously, when fuel economy is already low, any extra increase in fuel economy is a good thing, but is one mile per gallon really meaningful?

I saw the same thing and was laughing at the amount of coverage for their improvements that they were getting. The only good thing that I can really say about this, is that a proven improvement in one engine can be implemented in other engines. The 1 mpg for the big trucks and SUVs is not good, but maybe it will also help save the cars 3-5 mpgs on top of whatever else they are doing with them. Until we gas free vehicles, even hybrids need as fuel efficient of a gas engine as possible to go with the electric motor.

Good points. The report I saw did say that some of this technology was driven by work on the Cobalt, so it seems there is no reason not to spread this technology around.

Still, it is a little embarrassing how much press a 1 mpg improvement receives - just shows how pathetic is US fuel economy.

The press seems to be very pro GM and any little tiny thing GM does is hailed as a breakthrough, whereas other companies make bigger improvements and the press will shoot it down as having one kind of long term problem or another.

GM does have a huge advertising budget. Coincidence?
