Texas ramps up wind power

Texas ready to lead the US on wind power

Great story on MSNBC on a just approved Texas plan to significantly increase wind power production. But what's really interesting is that Texas electric consumers will help brunt the costs of this renewable project. The average Texan will pay about $4.00 more per month on their electric bills.

Would you pay a few dollars more per month in your utility bills to help power a green power project?

The $4 a month you mentioned won't hit people's bills until around 2014. Also, it will be outweighed by savings due to the wind-generated electricity displacing power from natural gas. Those savings are estimated at 3x the cost of the transmission lines.

Thanks Tom. I guess what I was getting at is that even if it cost $4.00 more, the long term payback makes $4.00 seem like a bargain.

No problem. It's just that for many people, $4/month is a lot of money, and not all of them will feel the way that you and I do.

Tom
