I've been following the Smart Car since I saw these vehicles being used for deliveries in Pasadena, California several years ago. Since I live in a very urban area, where parking can be a serious issue, such a vehicle is very tempting.

Yet, for such a small vehicle, its city fuel economy is not eye-popping compared to my favorite city car, the Toyota Prius. Still, the Smart costs much less than a Prius.

Despite its low cost, however, I still can't help but feel that the Smart is just a toy, even though it can be a great car for commuters. Nonetheless, maybe the Smart car can make consumers realize that big is not always better, especially if you are trying to park in an urban area.

And, simply scaling down the size of America's automobile fleet could be even more important than even hybrids.
