Diesel: Not part of America's future?

A Mercedes diesel hybrid at the LA Auto Show

A new survey indicates that most Americans believe advanced technology, especially hybrid cars and fuel cell cars are the future powertrains for American automobiles. Flex-fuel vehicles also made a strong showing.

Diesel vehicles, however, just didn't resonate with American consumers.

It's a pity. I love these new low-sulfur diesels. I want a Hyundai i30 which recently won Car of the Year here in Australia. Either that or a VW Golf TDI, or the larger Golf TDI. The Mazda 3s also look good. I will be test-driving the newly available automatic i30 when it hits the showrooms this month.

We are a two-car family (i'm not proud of it) and I think that with the worldwide spot-shortages we are facing in the next few years, it would be good to hedge your bets. The way I'm thinking if you are unable to buy unleaded one week you may still be able to get diesel, and vice-versa. I also think the black market for diesel will be more reliable.

I agree. I'm a huge hybrid fan, but I also like diesel vehicles, especially in the short term. I think people will become more receptive over time.
