Barack Obama loves corn-based ethanol, and the Presidential candidate is pushing a significant increase in ethanol production. And what's not to love about corn-based ethanol?
Corn-based ethanol received some $8 billion dollars worth of subsidies in 2006 - a politician's pork barrel wet dream.
But it's helping the planet, right?
Actually, corn-based ethanol is polluting groundwater, lakes, rivers and streams with fertilizers and chemical pesticides as it creates a dead zone in the lower Mississippi and upper Gulf of Mexico.
Despite the pollution, these subsidies could rise as high as $25 billion by 2017, or sooner, as ethanol production is increased according to a new study. But the problems of ethanol reach beyond pollution.
"Converting corn from food to fuel has, at best, dubious net energy benefits, but its impact on food prices, already significant, can only grow over time. With food carrying more than twice the weight in the CPI than energy, the policy response to record oil prices may become more inflationary than oil prices themselves."
So, Obama not only supports ridiculous subsidies for an endeavor that is destroying one of America's most precious resources, water, he also supports a costly program that will increase our food prices to a level that has more impact than rising oil prices?
This is Obama's new vision of politics?
