The Middle East: Replace Oil with Solar Power

Is solar power the key to the Middle East?

“Our potential in thermal solar power is four times the world’s energy consumption so you can have all the ambitions you want with that,” said Tewfik Hasni, managing director of New Energy Algeria, or NEAL, a company created by the Algerian government in 2002 to develop renewable energy. (more)

If that's just the potential of one country, imagine the potential of the entire Middle East and Northern Africa.

Imagine the potential of the Mojave Dessert and the American SouthWest.

If the real cost of gasoline today is somewhere near $10.00, isn't the real cost of solar power cost-effective today?

Imagine if the 100's of billions spent protecting cheap oil for the U.S. had been spent on solar power and a more stable, diversified electric grid - not just for America, but for the world?

Even more thought-provoking, would abundantly cheap and clean energy for the entire world make recruiting suicide-bombing terrorists such an easy task?

I love the idea of using renewable resources like solar energy! if we used solar power instead of gas and electric the whole world would benefit!we would no longer have to pay outrageous prices just to drive to the market, or to go visit a friend of family member. you could take a walk and not choke by the smell of car exost and pollutants. we would not have to cut down forests just for the oil under them. the whole world could benifit.
