Will Tesco take over America via the green revolution?

Tesco, the British grocery store chain and fourth largest retail chain in the world, made several green announcements yesterday. So what? Why should Americans care about a British grocery store? Soon, Tesco will open a store near my home in Los Angeles, and if things go well in Eagle Rock, California, you might just find a Tesco in your neighborhood soon. Aside from LA, Tesco already has plans to open in San Diego, Phoenix and Las Vegas.

Not only is Tesco going to build the world's largest roof top solar array on its distribution center in Riverside, California, the retailer is going to spend almost $1 billion cutting prices on energy efficient products.

"The huge growth in sales of organic food is testimony to the fact that people will make greener choices if we give them the right information, opportunity and incentive," Terry Leahy, chief executive of Tesco, said in a speech on Thursday according to Reuters.
