Is 2007 the year to invest in solar power?
While watching CNBC this morning a small feature on Morning Call focused on some investment trends for 2007. One major focus was SOI Technology, or silicon-on-insulator technology. SOI technology is essentially a form of silicon wafer insulation that has been known about for many years, but under-utilized because of cost. Today, however, SOI technology is being utilized by computer chip makers such as AMD, for example. As a result, this technology is now also making its way into silicon-based solar power technology. While the solar industry is expected to be sluggish in the short term due to a silicon shortage, it is projected to rebound significantly once the shortage is filled. When that rebound occurs, SOI technology could be an important aspect of that solar power explosion.
