Could scooters ever catch on in America?

The other day I came across an article on the Piaggio MP3, a three-wheeled scooter that provides greater stability, maneuverability, traction and stopping power than a two-wheeled scooter. The MP3 can achieve speeds of of almost 80 mph and costs around $7,000. Still, whether a scooter has two wheels or three wheels, will scooters ever really catch on in America? If gas prices go high enough, I guess anything is possible.
