Gas Prices, the Energy Bill and Congress
Since the Energy Bill passed the House of Representatives, I have scanned the media for a positive assessment of the Energy Bill.
I have been unable to find one.
A majority of Americans, ones that live near the poverty line - the ones you never hear about on the O.C. or on reruns of Beverly Hills 90210 - are coming up shorter and shorter each month because of gas prices. But, who cares about a bunch of hillbilly, disenfranchised Americans that don't vote anyway?
Definitely not Congress. Gas prices are skyrocketing and the blame falls on both Democrats and Republicans alike. The last President to really push fuel efficiency was Jimmy Carter, according to USAToday.
While it seems obvious that Republicans have oil-lined pockets, Democrats are not nearly as innocent as outspoken Nancy Pelosi-(D)California, would have us believe. Instead of blaming Republicans, perhaps she should start by questioning the UAW-controlled-Democrats that are just as complicit in protecting the status quo of the automotive industry.
Even China is raising fuel efficiency standards. Not because scientific evidence suggests a global warming connection, but because pollution is ALREADY affecting their lives and China isn't very interested in America's decades old, inefficient automotive technology.
Save that for the Americans too stupid to value substance over image.
But I don't blame those Americans because we haven't had much choice, thanks to Congress. Experts, including those from the government, tell us this is an issue of National Security, yet neither corporate America, nor Congress, is taking responsible action.
Instead, billions of tax-payer dollars are being given to rich-in-profit energy corporations to 'save' America from the problems the same corporations created.
So, when you are at the pump this summer, pumping $3.00 gallons of gasoline into your vehicle, remember to thank your well-paid Congress-person.
Labels: Democrats, fuel efficiency, gas tax, global warming, Republicans

The current oil situation as well as the basis (no matter what is claimed to cloak it in "bringing democracy to the poor arabs" for the loss of many young american men and women and collateral damage in life and property to Iraqi people has it's beginning in the refusal of the Reagan administration to fund synfuel development in this country and the rescending of synfuel grants in the first months of that administrations tenure. Coal liquids, Ashland Oil Inc H-coal process, Southern Indiana Shale Oil, Addington Enterprises, and numerous other startup synfuel projects that had recieved grants under the previous administration had those grants taken away because Big Oil companies that were then and are now making billions on middle eastern oil and had then and do now funded the election of Reagan and Bush did not want new oil sources developed even as a resource for emergencies. Now 25 years later we reap the harvest of that decision in higher prices, more dependence and needlessly lost lives wrapped up in religious fervor and quasi ill informed patriotism. The Brazilians in the petrosix division of petrobras had a working oil shale retorting system that was the only real operational system in the western hemisphere, China has oil retorting today and is expanding it but it was quashed here and remains quashed by big oil and their political allies all who make billions off of the middle eastern oil. There is no serious attempt by any american company to develop synthetic sources of oil thereby employing americans in american jobs, reducing dependence on foreign sources and keeping our money at home to rebuild our infrastructure and tax base. This country is being raped by multinational corporations and slowly ground down. Interestingly enough the current presidents own father was a big preponent of the urgent need to develop american based synthetic fuel alternatives to foreign oil and was only "converted" when his stint as vice president to the "great communicator" taught him the foolishness of opposing the multinational big oil companies and the military industrial complex that they are an integral part of. This is not a conspiracy theory it is just a reciting of the facts as listed in the headlines and editorial pages of the newspapers of the 70's and 80's before they could be intimidated by the government and thrown into jail for not revealing sources and audited (just a coincidence that you wrote now the IRS is looking at you). So the so-called "backward" communist nation of china is now the leader in producing oil from oil shales and coal along with a handful of other nations once being part of the soviet block and of course the coal synfuels industry of south africa (based on WWII german technology).
Hydrogen fuel would be wonderful but until the big multinational oil companies can lock up all the
processes to do so and prevent the rise of any american based startup companies you can bet it will not get any swift start just window dressing and pap to keep the complacent american public quiet. excuse me I have to go to the circus to pick up my daily bread.
