Business worried about global warming - sort of

The Business Roundtable, a group representing some of the nation's biggest companies, is going to launch a campaign designed to assure the public that represented businesses are concerned about global warming.

In reality; however, the goal of the Roundtable is to prevent any government mandates to reduce global warming emissions.

It seems that now that many citizens are becoming concerned about global warming, support for government action isn't inconceivable. So, businesses want to prove they are leaders, offsetting any chance of additional regulations.

Yet, the fact is clear that many of the nation's biggest companies are only taking action because they have to, not because of their desire to lead. One of the most glaring examples is the U.S. auto-industry, which has built its future around inefficient, gas-guzzling SUVs.

Had the industry shown leadership, it would focused on hybrid cars, and other emission reducing, gas-efficient automobiles. They chose profit rather than the future. Now we're supposed to believe these 'leaders' are going to do the right thing?

Please!

While I am not in favor of government mandates, big business needs to do more than publicity stunts. They need to take real action, and provide real results. Until then, their marketing efforts will still be focused around one and only one goal, profit. Their profit at the expense of citizen health can no longer be tolerated.
