Huge Breakthrough in Hybrid Automobile Technology
A French company has produced a new battery designed for electric cars, but also compatible with hybrid cars, such as the Toyota Prius or Honda Civic Hybrid. Batscap, a unit of the Bollore Corpoaration spent 12 years developing the lithium-polymer battery.
The new technology, already proven in laptops and iPods, is the first of its kind big enough to power a vehicle, such as a hybrid. In an electric car, the battery would only need to be charged once every 120 to 180 miles, providing consumers a cost of just 2 cents/mile. Moreover, the battery is good for almost 100,000 miles.
While originally designed for electric cars rather than hybrids, gas-electric hybrid cars could achieve significantly better mileage and increase space with smaller batteries, amongst other benefits. While many customers have criticized the sluggishness of electric cars, gas-electric hybrids produce significant horsepower increases in addition to huge fuel-efficiency gains. This breakthrough proves that even greater efficiency gains are possible.
Furthermore, aside from the immediate gains hybrids provide in fuel-efficiency and emissions, they also provide a direct path to fuel-celled technologies.
